ROME, Ga. –  Elizabeth Dowd and Tiffani Estep combined for 24 kills as Shorter swept West Alabama 3-0 in Gulf South Conference volleyball action at the Winthrop-King Centre on Friday.
The Tigers fall to 10-5 on the season, falling to 3-3 in the GSC. The Hawks improve to 13-1, moving to 8-1 in conference play.
"Tonight was one of those games where I walked in the locker room with very few negatives," UWA head coach
Alexis Meeks said. "We didn't come out with the win, but we played great, and these games are bound to happen."
"The transformation of this team from the first weekend to now is unbelievable, and we are going to keep at it until we get where we want to be."
The Hawks took the first set 25-23 after a West Alabama attack error and Madeline Monroe kill gave Shorter the final two points to win the set.
Despite falling in three straight sets, UWA combined to hit a .127 attack percentage while SU finished with .175. Shorter's largest margin of victory came by a score of 25-18 in the second set.
With the third set tied at 24-24, Shorter was forced to rally to score the last two points. Two kills by Dowd and Alicia McClellan gave the Hawks the 26-24 victory to complete the sweep.
Briana Sandifer picked up a double-double in the loss, recording 17 kills and 10 digs.
Abby Ames led the Tiger defense with 15 digs, followed by
Yanesha Johnson with 13 digs.
Dowd led the Hawks' attack with 13 kills and grabbed 14 digs for the SU defense in a double-double performance, followed by Estep who finished with 11 kills on the night. Cheyenne McLemore led the Shorter defense with 16 digs.
The Tigers will remain on the road, facing Lee University in GSC action on Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
