West Alabama Falls to Montevallo in Extra Time

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A late header from Montevallo's Patrick Morton was enough to lift the Falcons to a 3-2 victory over West Alabama men's soccer in the Tigers' season opener on Sunday.

The Tigers fall to 0-1 on the season, while Montevallo improves to 2-0.

"It's a tough pill to swallow when you lose in overtime," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "We battled hard, but you have to give it to Montevallo. They came in and made it a long fight and worked for every ball."

"Montevallo did what they had to do, and scored a lot of goals of off set pieces. I thought we could have done better to keep the ball. We played too direct, rather than getting the ball down and trying to get our creative players involved, but we will learn from it. It's disappointing, but there are more positives to come from this season."

West Alabama opened up the scoring as Liam Ireland hit Stephen Carroll with a pass into the box for an 11th minute goal. The score was Carroll's first of the season, as Ireland tallied his first assist on the year.

Montevallo answered, with Jeffre Hessenberger netting the equalizer in the 51st minute.

The Tigers and Falcons traded goals once more in regulation, as Harrison Roberts scored his first goal of the 2016 campaign, giving West Alabama a 2-1 advantage off of a free kick in the 70th minute. Montevallo responded in the 78th minute, as Arad Lev Ari leveled the match 2-2 on an assist from Josh Keller.

Morton struck the decisive blow for UM, netting the game-winner on a 103rd minute header set up by free kick cross from Oliver Cylkowoski.

Robert Kuta (2-0) earns the win, totaling three saves while facing five shots-on-goal. Brad Louis (0-1) takes the loss, allowing three goals on nine shots faced.

The Tigers will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to face off against Nova Southeastern on Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
