West Alabama Women Cruise to GSC Win over Christian Brothers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama took the lead with just barely two minutes gone in the game and never looked back on the way to a 71-42 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over Christian Brothers Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for West Alabama (5-12, 2-8). Christian Brothers (9-6, 6-5) had a modest three-game winning streak snapped.

"For the first time this year we won all four quarters," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "These kids have not quit, and it would have been easy to after losing seven straight. It would have been easy to hang your head, but we haven't."

West Alabama sprinted out to a 4-27 advantage by halftime and then tightened the clamps on the Lady Bucs in the second half, allowing just 15 points, five in the third quarter.

"There are two things that prove you are ready to play, rebounding and taking charge on defense," Cram said. "We were able to adjust when they starting attacking the rims to start the third quarter."

UWA allowed CBU to shoot just 16 percent (4-for-24) from the floor in the final 30 minutes and the Tigers controlled the boards, outrebounding Christian Brothers 51-32. UWA converted 10-of-19 three point tries (52 percent).

Ariel Wilson led West Alabama with 18 points and eight rebounds. Peyton Parker made 4-of-4 from beyond the three-point line to finish with 12 points. Chloe Culpepper scored 11 and grabbed seven rebounds.

Rachel Lee was the only Lady Buc to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points. Madison Luckett had seven rebounds to lead CBU.

West Alabama continues a two-game homestand by hosting Union on Saturday. Christian Brothers travels to West Georgia on Saturday.
