Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mississippi College Hangs on for 75-72 Win Over Tiger Women

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College converted its last five field goal attempts and its last six free throw tries to edge out a 75-72 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The win by the Lady Choctaws (4-6, 1-5) snapped a four-game losing streak. West Alabama (4-9, 1-5) lost its fourth straight.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with UWA leading for 16:15 and MC for 17:38. The game was tied for 6:07. The Tigers largest lead was five points in the first quarter, while the Lady Choctaws led by as many six points with 1:56 to play.

"This team has a chance to win some games, but we have to learn to be coachable for 40 minutes," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "We had three lapses that cost us. We keep digging ourselves into holes."

An Ariel Wilson putback with 39.4 seconds left pulled the Tigers to within three points at 69-66. Two free throw by Wilson made it 73-72 Mississippi College with just 7.0 seconds left before Ashley Minor converted a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds left to ice the win.

Minor and Kelly Allen made six free throws down the stretch to salt away the win for the Lady Choctaws. Minor led all scorers with 23 points. Allen chipped in 17 more, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor.

Wilson scored 21 and grabbed eight rebounds to lead West Alabama. Catherine Taylor had 17 points and seven boards. Sydney King came off the bench to collect seven rebounds in 20 minutes.

"I thought coming in the key matchup would be Kelly Allen and Catherin Taylor, and for three quarters I thought Cat won that matchup," Cram said. "Allen was the difference down the stretch. You have to account for her and make others beat you. Minor did that today."

West Alabama completes an abbreviated two-game road swing at Delta State on Monday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Mississippi College is host to West Georgia on Monday.
