Delta State Starts Fast, Holds Off UWA Rally for 58-45 Women’s GSC Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State took control early and then held off a second-half West Alabama rally on the way to a 58-45 Gulf South Conference women's college basketball victory over West Alabama Monday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Delta State evened its overall record at 6-6 and improved to 3-4 in GSC play. The win was the seventh straight for the Lady Statesmen over the Tigers. West Alabama fell to 4-10 and 1-6 with its fifth consecutive loss.

Delta State raced out to a 29-11 lead by halftime, thanks in large part to converting 12-of-24 shots from the floor (50%) and limiting the Tigers to just 5-for 21 (23%).

West Alabama rallied to outscore the Lady Statesmen 21-18 in the third quarter and cut a once 24-point DSU lead to eight points (47-39) on a three-pointer by Catherine Taylor with 7:15 left to play.

Eight points was as close as the Tigers would get, however. Ariel Wilson's 15-foot jumper broke a four-minute UWA scoring drought with 3:31 left in the game. The Tigers managed to make just two field goals after Taylor's trey with 7:15 left.

Wilson was the lone Tiger to score in double figures with 10 points, with six of those coming from the free throw line. Sydney King came off the UWA bench to grab seven rebounds.

Aspriona Gilbert scored 18 points for Delta State to lead all scorers. Alondrea Rush chipped in 16 and Kaelin Kneeland 12 for the Lady Statesmen. Ieysha Mays and Kneeland had seven rebounds each.

West Alabama returns to Pruitt Hall Gym to host West Florida on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Delta State is host to North Alabama on Thursday.
