Ireland's two goals lead Tigers to 2-0 victory over UM

MONTEVALLO, Ala.— Liam Ireland scored his third and fourth goals of the season to give the West Alabama Tigers enough room to claim a 2-0 victory over the Montevallo Falcons Sunday night.

The Tigers improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in Gulf South Conference play with the win while the hosting Falcons fell to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in GSC competition.

"Delighted with the lads overall performance! We worked tirelessly both sides of the ball," said Head coach Matthew Thorne. "Liam Ireland came up big with two goals."

Ireland's first goal came on a successful penalty kick with 34:36 passed in the match. The senior midfielder followed that with a goal at the 59:22 mark with assists from Ali Brador and Jean-Baptiste Meyniel to give UWA the 2-0 final advantage.

"When we won it we played very effective together," said Thorne. "Great team performance. It's very simple "we are not here to play bingo!""

UWA's offense came out aggressive and outshot the Falcons 22-13 in the road match. Ireland led the Tiger charge with seven total shots in the late evening contest. Brad Louis came away with six saves to preserve a clean sheet for the Tigers.

West Alabama returns to action Friday once more on the road in Cleveland, Miss. to take on Delta State in a key GSC match starting at 3 p.m. Montevallo travels to Union University for a road match on Oct. 6.
