Shiels nails Golden Goal in 2OT for win over Mississippi College

LIIVINGSTON, Ala. – In a titanic clash of importance in the Gulf South Conference, Jack Shiels nailed a golden goal header at 106:13 mark in the 2nd overtime period to give the West Alabama Tigers a 2-1 victory over Mississippi College Monday night in Tiger Stadium.

UWA improves to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the GSC. MC falls to 8-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference.

"I think we did very well. They battled until the last second," said Head Coach Matthew Thorne. "Of course, scoring the golden goal shows character and resolve in this team."

Both teams were scoreless in the first half, but MC's Jacob Farthing broke the silence with a goal at the 61:22 mark to put the Choctaws on top 1-0.

Gaspard Voiturez-Donnelly answered the goal for the Tigers with 77:32 passed to tie the game at 1-1, a score which would last until the overtime period.

Both teams were aggressive in their attack with the Choctaws taking a slight edge in total shots 17-16. Ali Brador lead UWA with five shots, four of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Brad Louis finished with eight saves in the contest.

"This time last year, we had a tough loss to Mississippi College and we're hoping we can just keep it rolling from here," said Thorne.

UWA returns to action Friday night at home against Union starting at 7:30 p.m. and the Tigers will celebrate senior night for nine members of the team.
