Macias hits Golden Goal to give Tigers 1-0 win over CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala— In what could be his final collegiate performance in Tiger Stadium, Alvaro Macias hit the golden goal on a penalty kick to give the West Alabama Tigers a 1-0 overtime victory in Gulf South Conference Men's Soccer action over the Bucs of Christian Brothers Sunday afternoon.

"Alvaro showed he was cold as ice, putting a good lick on it and slapping it in the back of the net," said Head coach Matthew Thorne about the game winning goal from Macias.

The win, the fourth of its kind in overtime, gives UWA a prime opportunity to take possession of the first place in the points standings and improves the record to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in GSC play. CBU's lose drops the Bucs to 7-5-1 and 6-2-1 in the conference.

Macias was awarded the penalty kick after being fouled in the box by Brendan Bennett of Christian Brothers. The senior from Cadiz, Spain didn't waste the opportunity notch his first goal of the season and connected to give the Tigers their eighth straight win.

West Alabama outshot CBU 14-11 throughout the contest. Macias went a perfect 2-for-2 shots on goal to lead the Tigers.

"It was a game of two halves," said Thorne. "First half we weren't very good. Credit to CBU. They're a quality team, well organized and gave us a lot of problems throughout the game."

UWA returns to action Friday night in Rome, Ga. against Shorter with the contest scheduled to start t 6:30 p.m. locally. The Tigers will be on the road for the remainder of the regular season.
