Tigers Sweep Age Group Podiums at Tri The Gulf

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Fla. – The University of West Alabama triathlon team swept the age-group podiums where entered at the Tri The Gulf sprint triathlon Saturday.

UWA competitors finished first and second in the age 17-19 division, with Caitlyn Muncher first and McKenna de la Garza second. Chloe Bennett, Julia Bergmann and Emma Powell finished one, two, three in the 20-24 age group division.

The course featured a 600-yard ocean swim, a 16.7-mile bike ride and a 3.25-mile run.

"Today was a great day. The swim start was delayed about 30 min, which unfortunately allowed the wind to pick up and make the water pretty choppy," UWA coach Allie Nicosia said, "but the girls were still able to do a great job.

"It was the first time racing and swimming in the ocean for three of our five athletes, and there was a large group of jellyfish in the water that posed an added challenge," Nicosia said. "The strong winds, particularly over the bridge, added an extra level of difficulty to the event, but they fought through and did a good job."

The Tigers close the fall season in Tempe, Arizona on Nov. 4 at the National Championships.
