Webster’s Golden Goal lifts Tigers to 2-1 victory over Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn.— The West Alabama Tigers had four previous games go into overtime and came away with four victories. The fifth time was no different as Cole Webster hit the Golden Goal needed to give UWA a 2-1 victory to clinch the regular season Gulf South Conference crown.

"You couldn't write this script. That's the fifth overtime golden goal we have won this season," said Head coach Matthew Thorne. "We're Not here to play to bingo! Buzzing with my cousin."

The Tigers improve to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in the GSC, while Lee falls to 5-6-4 and 4-5-2 in the conference.

Webster's goal came with 109:24 passed in the second portion of the overtime period. The freshman forward from Prattville, Ala. used an assist from Jean-Baptiste Meyniel to score his second goal of the season.

Both teams played each other tight with the first score in the match coming at the 81:51 mark when Lee's Owen Keck finding the back of the net off an assist from fellow Craig Quinn.

The Tigers had to respond quickly and did so with 86:38 passed when Jack Shiels scored on an assist from Kyle McLeod to force overtime. The goal for Shiels was his second on the season.

"Absolute credit to the lads. Their work rate for each other, their deep belief that we're going to win any game no matter the circumstances," said Thorne. "So proud of these young men that have won our fourth championship in a row. The lads are class acts plain and simple."

UWA outshot the Flames 19-12 with Ali Brador leading the way with five shots and two registering as shots-on-goal.

The Tigers are set to close the regular season Thursday on the road at the University of Alabama in Huntsville with that contest starting at 7:30 p.m. Lee closes the regular season on the road against Tusculum College.
