Volleyball falls in five sets to Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After winning the first set, the West Alabama Tigers dropped two straight before forcing a fifth decisive set. However, it was the Montevallo Falcons who defended home court and took a 3-2 win in Gulf South Conference volleyball action.
 
UWA drops to 16-12 overall and 8-4 in the GSC. Montevallo improves to 13-12 and 7-6 in the conference.
 
The Tigers won the first set 27-25, but dropped the next two 22-25 and 15-25 before rallying to take the fourth set 26-24. However, UWA was unable to put away the Falcons and UM claimed the hard fought fifth set as the Tigers fell 18-20.
 
The West Alabama offense was led by a trio of attackers with double digit kills as Briana Sandifer had 19 and both Taylor Donato and Taylin McCarver registered 10 kills. Three-Time reigning GSC Freshman of the Week Kassie Till fueled the offense with 42 assists.
 
Rebecca Johnson led the defense with 19 digs while Elizabeth Carter (15) and Alex Fuelling (14) also finished with double digit digs. Jamie Lancellot led the front line with eight blocks with Donato having six and Sandifer contributing five blocks.
 
Kristy Bohan led UM with 23 kills and Harley Masoner has 41 assists.
 
UWA returns to action Saturday as the Tigers host Mississippi College in Pruitt Hall starting at 1 p.m. in GSC action. Montevallo travels to face Shorter on Nov. 3.
