Tigers hold Falcons down for a 3-0 victory

LIVINGSTON, Ala.— After being down ten points in the second set, the West Alabama Tigers rallied to claim that set and the final one in a 3-0 straight set victory over the Montevallo Falcons Friday night in Gulf South Conference Volleyball action.

With the victory, UWA improves to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the GSC. Montevallo falls to 7-7 and 3-4 in the conference.

"I'm always excited when we can win obviously," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "We have a really good conference record right now and we need to continue that, especially going into Crossover next weekend. There seeding is based off your conference standings going into it, so it's really important for us to get the win tomorrow going into next weekend. Anytime that you can win at home in your conference is great."

The Tigers were down 16-6 in the second set before Coach Meeks called a pivotal time out to rally her squad.

"What I told them in the timeout, kind of what I've preached all year, is stay consistent. Knowing that you are good no matter what the situation is, score, what's happening with the game and the environment we're good enough to come back," said Meeks. "I think that they knew that, so they were hesitant at all. We weren't frantic. We knew just going back out there and serving aggressive was super important for us."

From there, UWA outscored the Falcons 21-9 to claim the second set and go on to win the match.

Briana Sandifer lead the Tiger attack with 11 kills and four service aces. The senior from Huntsville, Ala. also led with four blocks. Kassie Till racked up 17 assists and Rebecca Johnson controlled the floor with 11 digs.

Kristy Bohan led Montevallo with 11 kills while Liz Tisch put up 20 assists.

It's a quick turnaround for UWA as the Tigers are set to host West Georgia for a GSC match Saturday starting at noon in Pruitt Hall. Montevallo travels to face Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss.
