Tigers show consistency in 3-0 win over West Georgia

LIVINGSTON, Ala.— The West Alabama Tigers faced a game West Georgia Wolves squad Saturday afternoon in Pruitt Hall, but in the end consistency and adaptability led to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Wolves in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) improves to 13-6 overall and 5-1 in GSC play. UWG falls to 2-14 and 1-7 in the conference.

"Our team effort was much better than it was last night as far as consistency goes. I thought that every single set today we came out and jump started the way we wanted to, and that's what we talked about after last night's match going into today," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "West Georgia jumped out early with us and we were point for point for a little while. Our serve and pass game is what ultimately in every set took us apart from them and I thought that we did that throughout the entire match really well."

In the first set, the Wolves pulled within two points twice at 11-9 and then again at 21-19, but the Tigers made key changes to push back the aggressive Wolves.

"The biggest thing in the first set is we had to make adjustments because of how well West Georgia was playing," said Meeks. "Their pin hitters were attacking aggressively down the line and we had not planned for that at all. So, in the second time out that I called, I made that adjustment and the team went out there and made it right away instead of waiting a few points. I was really proud of how quickly the made adjustments and then we carried those through sets two and three which were much better."

UWA put up a team hitting percentage of .309 led by Briana Sandifer's 17 kills and .424 percentage on attack. Kassie Till put up 29 assists to round offenseive leaders. Defensively, Taylor Donato led the front line with three blocks while Rebecca Johnson collected 15 digs. McKaidan Moore also put up double digit digs with 10.

"Offense is translated from passing and I so I thought that our passing could've been a little bit better today, but overall I thought it was really good," said Meeks. "Our digging got a lot better. Kassie Till did a great job of distributing where we needed the ball the go and you can see Bri (Sandifer) had 17 kills and hit over .400. She's always also been our consistency factor and I'm always really proud of her and how she's been leading this team as a senior. Both of our middles hit over .300 which is our goal for them and Kassie and Jordyn (Beans) did a good job of getting them balls when we needed to in transition to get those easy kills. Anytime we can hit over .250 I'm happy, so to be over .300 is just phenomenal."

Anjelina Webb led West Georgia with 12 kills and 11 digs.

While the schedule says the Tigers will be off until next weekend's GSC-SSC (Sunshine State Conference) Crossover, there won't be much resting in Pruitt Hall.

"We're going to go hard every single day," said Meeks. This is the first time we've been at the top of our conference since going into the Crossover. I believe last year we went in at 7th place, the year before 8th and now we're going in 3rd which means we're going to be playing their top teams in the conference and I believe they have a couple of teams that are ranked in the top-25 right now. That's what I want for this team. I want them to go in and play the best teams in their conference. Regardless of what the result is, it's going to help else toward the end of our season by playing better teams. Every single day this week, we can't go in taking reps off, taking breaks because we know what type of competition we have ahead of us. But we're going to be fine and we're going to be prepared. The girls are excited and that's the important part that they want to play the best teams. They're not intimidated at all."

The GSC-SSC schedule is set to be released in the coming days.
