Robinson notches double-double as UWA wins season opener over Florida Southern, 85-78

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Four Tigers scored in double digits and Gavin Robinson put up a double-double as the West Alabama Tigers opened the season with a winning effort to the tune of an 85-78 over the Florida Southern Mocs Friday night in the 2017 Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Classic.
 
With the win, UWA owns a 1-0 record while Florida Southern drops to 0-1.
 
Robinson scored 17 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and made three assists. However, it was Charles Eaton who led all scorers with 22 points to along with eight rebounds and five steals. Josh Fleming scored 16 in his Tiger debut and made three assists. Jake Jobbling went 5 of 9 from behind the arc to score 15.
 
UWA controlled the game and won both halves after leading, 36-32 going into the midway break and then winning the second half, 49-46.
 
It was in the first half where Jobbling kept the Mocs defense off balance four three-pointers. The second half belong to Robinson and Eaton who combined for 30 of the team's 49 points.
 
 In the half, Robinson went 7 of 11 from the free throw line and finished 11 of 15 from the charity stripe to score 13. Eaton went 6 of 8 from the field including one from behind the arc in the second half and hit four throws for his 17 points.
 
As a team, UWA shot 46 percent from the field and an impressive 42 percent from the three-point line.
 
Jonathan Lawton led Florida Southern in points with 20. Jack Rauch notched a double-double of his own with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
 
UWA returns to action tomorrow at 5 p.m. in their second game of the GSC/SSC Classic against Eckerd College in Cleveland, Miss. Florida Southern will face Delta State in the same venue to conclude the event.
