Eaton scores 31, Tigers fall to Eckerd College

CLEVELAND, Miss. – It was a fierce battle throughout, but a late run by the Eckerd College Tritons was enough to hand the West Alabama Tigers their first loss of the season 82-79 despite a 31-point effort by Charles Eaton Saturday evening in the 2017 Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Classic.
 
UWA falls to 1-1 overall on the young season while Eckerd improves to 2-0.
 
After being down by eight with 5:07 left, the Tigers battled back to tie the game at 76-76 with two minutes left. However, EC pulled away and outscored UWA 6-3 down the stretch to secure the victory.
 
Eaton also dished nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds to go along with his 31 points which led all scorers. Charles Tripp was the only other Tiger in double figures with 14 points to go along with six rebounds.
 
A quartet of Tritons finished with double digit scoring efforts as Drushaun McLaurn led with 19, Blake Morrow scored 13 and both Marco Behori and Travis Bianco scored 11.
 
West Alabama was 41.9 percent from the field and an impeccable 18 of 20 from the free throw line, good for a 90 percent mark.
 
The Tigers host Oakwood University in their home opener in Pruitt Hall Tuesday night with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eckerd College plays at Tampa in SSC action on Nov. 15.
