Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eaton, Fleming Combine for 62 in Tiger Win over Faulkner

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Charles Eaton and Josh Fleming combined for 62 points as West Alabama outgunned Faulkner, 97-91, in men's college basketball Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Alabama improved to 3-1 with the victory. Faulkner lost for the first time this season and fell to 6-1.

"It is good to win a close one," UWA head coach Allen Sharpe said. "It makes the guys a lot more coachable at practice the next day.

"Faulkner is really good and those guards are jets," Sharpe said. "We made just enough free throws down the stretch."

Eaton recorded a double-double with 37 points and 10 rebounds, while Fleming added 25 points and had seven assists. The two were a combined 17-for-31 from the floor as West Alabama shot 50 percent for the game (30-of-60).

"I have told Chuck (Eaton) that he is going to have to put his big boy pants on and shoulder a lot of the load for us this year," Sharpe said. "It's obvious he is crucial to our success. He has come a long way as a teammate."

West Alabama led 51-43 at the half, but the Eagles outscored the Tigers 50-44 in the final 20 minutes and cut the lead to a single point with just over five minutes left in the game.

The Tigers didn't convert a field goal for 4:43 midway through the second half, allowing Faulkner to rally back into the game. The Eagles also shot the basketball well, converting 57 percent from the floor (35-of-61).

"They were a matchup problem for us and we were lucky to get through this one," Sharpe said. "This team is going to be different. We are going to give up some points, but on the flip side we are going to score some too."

After four games, West Alabama is averaging 89 points per game and allowing 79.5. The Tigers have scored 192 points in the last two games and haven't scored less than 79 all season. Conversely, UWA has allowed two of four opponents more than 80 points.

The score was tied seven times, but changed hands just twice in a game where Faulkner dominated the inside, outscoring UWA 48-22 in the paint.

Despite leading for almost eight minutes early in the game, the Eagles couldn't get over the hump in the second half due to West Alabama making 9-of-9 free throw attempts down the stretch, 25-of-32 for the game.

Jake Jobling chipped in 11 points for UWA. Trey Petty rounded out double figure scorers for the Tigers with 10.

Logan Jozwiak and Lucas Lutrell led six Faulkner double figure scorers with 17 points apiece. Rene Scott added 15, Marquis Grays 12, Earvin Perroni 11 and Adnan Halilovic 10. Jozwiak collected nine rebounds for the Eagles.

West Alabama begins a three-game road swing at Lane College Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
