Tigers control pace in 78-58 win over Wingate at the Bahama House Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Controlling the tempo was the name of the game for the West Alabama Tigers and they did just that while limiting the Wingate Bulldogs offense in a 78-58 win in the first round of the 2017 Bahama House Shootout in the ICI Center on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

UWA improves to 4-2 overall while Wingate is now 2-4 on the season.

"I told the guys in the locker room we got better from last Saturday at Lane to Friday here versus Wingate. We got better at both ends of the floor," said Head Coach Allen Sharpe. "Our pace was much more under control which leads to a higher field goal percentage and we obviously did a much better job defending, holding these guys to 58 points. A good week of practice has paid off, so let's keep improving."

The Tigers limited Wingate to just 23 percent from behind the arc where the Bulldogs do most of their damage offensively.

"It's a team sport, it's a team game but at some point it's a little bit on the individual on who's got that matchup," said Sharpe. "You got to get it done for the well fare of the team. They ended up making six and they made two of them out of the gate, so that's only four the rest of the way. I thought for the most part Charles Eaton and Josh Fleming were on those shooters and did a good job of being mindful of where they were throughout the game."

Charles Eaton led the Tigers with 31 points, his third 30-point game of the year, and added three steals and a pair of rebounds.

"He's a very, very talented player and can do somethings most guys can't do or would have a hard time doing," said Sharpe. "He's grown a lot and matured as a young man. He and I are going on four years together now and we're about to a point where it's like a father/son deal, and I'm really proud that's he's in school and has a chance to play and the progress that he's made, not just on the floor. He wasn't a bad guy, but the maturity factor he's grown up so much more. When he was here two years ago, he only averaged 18 to 20 minutes a game and there's a reason why he averaged that. Now, he's going to be a 30 to 35 minutes a night guy and it's because he's matured so much more."

Gavin Robinson notched another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while making a steal. Fleming finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Domonique Alexander grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers and added nine points, four blocks and a steal.

Devarious Christian led Wingate with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

UWA advances to the championship round of the 2017 Bahama House Shootout and will face Gulf South Conference foe Auburn-Montgomery at 3 p.m. CST/4 p.m. EST. Wingate and Embry-Riddle will meet in the consolation game beforehand.
