UNA Opens GSC Play With 84-67 Win at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Emma and Ivy Wallen combined for 49 points as North Alabama defeated West Alabama, 84-67, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.
 
North Alabama improved to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in league play. West Alabama dropped to 2-5 with its third straight loss, 0-1 in the GSC.
 
Emma Wallen, converted 10-of-21 field goal attempts, including six three-pointers to lead all scorers with 28 points. Her sister Ivy contributed a double-double with 21 points and 10 assists. She made 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
West Alabama led 40-36 at the half and led by six points at 6:21 in the first quarter before falling apart in the second half, finishing the game with 24 turnovers which UNA converted to 30 points. The Lions largest lead was 17 points with 1:40 to play.
 
The Lions outscored West Alabama 48-27 in the second half and limited UWA field goal shooting to 37 percent after the Tigers had converted 53 percent in the first half. UNA made 48 percent from the floor over the final two quarters after shooting just 31 percent in the first half.
 
"We just didn't play in the second half," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We left it up to a true freshman to carry us and our upperclassmen just didn't show up in the second half."
 
Freshman Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led West Alabama with 20 points, connecting on 8-of-9 field goal attempts. She also had four rebounds and four assists. Chloe Culpepper came off the UWA bench to score 11 points and grab six rebounds as the Tiger bench outscored the Lions, 22-6.
 
North Alabama outrebounded UWA 47-36, collecting 19 offensive rebounds. Michaela DeKilder had eight rebounds to lead the Lions, while Ashley Eubank and Savannah Stults had three steals each as the Lions had 11 steals in the game.
 
West Alabama is host to Alabama Huntsville Sunday at 2 p.m. North Alabama concludes a five-game road swing at Montevallo on Saturday.
