West Alabama Evens GSC Record with 62-55 Win Over UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – J'Nyiah Daniels scored 19 points and the West Alabama defense limited Alabama Huntsville to just 28 percent shooting from the floor on the way to a 62-55 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory Sunday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Alabama improved to 3-5 overall with the win, 1-1 in league play. UAH is 5-2 and 1-1. The UWA victory snapped both a three-game Tiger losing skid and UAH's three-game winning streak.

"This is the best defense we have played all year," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We can be a good team, but our players don't always believe that yet, so we have started breaking the game down to five minutes at a time.

"We won the first five minutes of the second half and took off from there," Cram said. "We won three of the final four five-minute games in the second half."

Despite shooting just 29 percent (9-of-31) from the floor, West Alabama led by three points at the half, but had limited the Chargers to just 25 percent (6-of-24). The Tigers rallied to make 11-of-23 field goal attempts in the second half (47 percent).

Daniels helped put the game away for the Tigers with a three-pointers on three straight possessions midway through the fourth quarter on the way to a 6-for-12 night from the floor. Sydney Bozeman collected a game-high 13 rebounds for UWA, who edged the Chargers 43-41 on the glass.

"When J'Nyiah is playing well she makes me a pretty good coach," Cram said. "Sydney Bozeman simply had a great afternoon against a preseason all-conference player."

Kierra Groce chipped in 13 points and Tazsa Garrett-Hammett added 11 to round out double-figure scoring for West Alabama.

Chandler Elder posted a double-double for UAH, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Loren Foster chipped in 14 for the Chargers.

After taking the week off for Fall Semester final exams, West Alabama remains in GSC play Saturday at Mississippi College. UAH steps out of conference by hosting Claflin on Saturday.
