Tigers fall to Alabama A&M 63-47 in exhibition finale

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – It was a tough, gritty battle but the West Alabama Tigers couldn't overcome the size advantage from the Alabama A&M Bulldogs and fell 63-47 in their women's college exhibition finale.

AAMU led 11-10 after the first quarter pushed that lead 28-16 at the half by limiting the Tigers to just six second quarter points.

"We played totally scared in the first half," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "We were playing without a post game tonight because two fives were injured, so we had to move some people around and play more guards on the inside and we couldn't matchup with them. We tried a few things that we really hadn't been practicing, but I saw fear in the first half."

The Tigers battled AAMU more evenly in the second half with the visiting Bulldogs winning the third and fourth quarters by a combined score of 35-31.

"They finally woke up about mid-way through the second half. They started competing and growing up a little bit," said Cram. "If we could've gotten them to do that in the first half, the game might have been different."

J'Nyiah Daniels lead UWA with 15 points and also grabbed three rebounds, made a steal and dished an assist.

"She (Daniels) started taking things on her shoulders," said Cram. "She could that we weren't getting things and other people weren't scoring. She started stepping up and competing which is what you want, because she's a sophomore and she's got a lot of games ahead of her and a good career ahead of her."

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett, despite playing out of her normal position, made her impact felt on the boards with 16 rebounds to go along with eight points.

"That's a true freshman and she pulled down 16 rebounds against a DI (NCAA Division I) team," said Cram. "She played hard and played against a lot bigger people than she's used to because she's not a true five, but still pulled down 16 rebounds."

AAMU had two players in double figures as Lauren McKee led all scorers with 18 points and Deshawna Harper scored 17.

UWA starts the regular season Friday at the Regional Tipoff Challenge in St. Petersburg, Fla. against Eckerd College. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
