Garrett-Hammett Leads UWA to 69-62 Win over Miles

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Freshman Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead West Alabama to a 69-62 women's college basketball victory over Miles College Wednesday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improved West Alabama to 4-6 heading into a two-game road swing to close out play before the holiday break. Miles dropped to 2-5.

With UWA down 36-32 at the half and Garrett-Hammett just 1-for-6 from both the floor and the free throw line, the freshman from LaGrange, Georgia put the Tigers on her back the rest of the way.

Garrett-Hammett scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor in the final 20 minutes. For good measure she added four steals, three of those in the final two quarters.

"My teammates helped me realize that it's okay to make a mistake and they kept encouraging me," Garrett-Hammett said. "In high school, I got by on my ability alone. Our coaches have taught me it's a mental game as well."

Six of Garrett-Hammett's nine rebounds were on the offensive end and represented half of UWA's offensive rebound totals. Miles outrebounded UWA 34-33, but the Tigers turned 20 Golden Bears turnovers into 20 points.

"Tazsa was frustrated after the first half, but once she figures it out, she is really fun to watch," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "She can play anywhere from one to five and it is really nice to have a 6-footer who can run baseline to baseline."

The lead changed hands 16 times and the score was tied 11 times. UWA led for just 8:46 of the game and the Tigers largest lead was the final score.

"Morgan Sams had some great minutes for us in her first extended action after coming off an injury," Cram said. "Elaine Field played hard all night. She brings a ton of energy."

J'Nyiah Daniels came off the UWA bench to chip in 10 points as West Alabama shot 45 percent (23-for-51) from the floor. Miles shot 50 percent (25-of-50).

Victoria Sutton and Darika Chelsey both scored 11 points to lead Miles. Taylor Terry chipped in 10 and blocked three shots. Ashley McCrear had seven rebounds for the Golden Bears.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday at West Florida. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Miles remains on the road, playing at Rollins (Fla.) College Saturday at noon.
