Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Missed opportunities doom UWA in double overtime loss to No. 12 UWF, 75-72

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Alabama Tigers held a three-point lead with just under four minutes left in double overtime, but missed free throws and mistakes led the No. 12 West Florida Argonauts pulling out a physical 75-72 victory Saturday night at the UWF Field House in Gulf South Conference Men's basketball action.

UWA falls to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the GSC as the loss snaps a six-game winning streak. UWF improves to 10-0 and 2-0 in the conference.

"I think we blew it and I told them in the locker room that we blew it," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "We played the last over time and they didn't have (Rashaan Benson) or (Darryl Tucker) in the game and we can't win the game."

Charles Eaton scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Gavin Robinson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Josh Fleming, who received two technical fouls, finished with 11 points, six assists and two rebounds.

UWA was inefficient in scoring tonight, scoring 41 percent from the floor, accumulating 26 turnovers as a team and turning in a dreadful 16 of 32 effort from the free throw line.

"Eaton, Fleming and Robinson have to play and they have to play well every night and they didn't," said Sharpe. "All we have to do is make a free throw. There's a ton of aspects you can look at that impacting winning and losing, but at the end of the day just make a free throw and we win the ball game."

Despite the mistakes the game was there for the taking for UWA, but the Tigers could never get over the hump.

"It felt like certain times during the game, I was just waiting us to go on ahead and do it and win this game," said Sharpe. "We just never could do it. Perfect example, we were up one and couldn't inbound the basketball. We gave that one away and found more ways to impact losing the game than more plays to impact winning."

West Alabama will have a day to prepare to face the Valdosta State Blazers (8-2, 1-1) on the road another tough GSC matchup to finish the 2017 portion of the schedule Monday night. VSU went to 3OTs tonight in a 139-135 victory over Montevallo.

"Valdosta is really good and we're going to find out what we're made of there," said Sharpe.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST/8 p.m. EST and will broadcast live on ESPN 104.9.
