Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers' defense forces 19 turnovers in 82-66 win over UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers built an early nine-point lead, but it didn't last after a 23-1 run gave the West Alabama Tigers enough cushion to come away with an 82-66 victory in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action Sunday night in Pruitt Hall.

UWA improves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in GSC play while UAH falls to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

"It started in the pregame warmup. Our guys were ready to play and we knew we had to defend and had to defend the three," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "We knew they were making 12 three's a game. If we were going to keep their points down, which gives us a chance to win, we have to guard the three and we did a good job of it tonight. They ended up making eight. Defense won the game for us tonight. We had good energy."

Even though the Tigers defense would prove to be stout with 19 turnovers, which lead to 26 points for UWA, Sharpe had some concerns about the Sunday contest.

"Going into this game I was very worried. It's on a Sunday afternoon and it's about time for our Sunday afternoon nap at 4 p.m," said Sharpe. "We just came off a win over UNA and they just came off a loss to Montevallo, I was just worried they would be hungry and we wouldn't be ready to play."

Josh Fleming led West Alabama with 25 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Charles Eaton was right behind him with 24 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Gavin Robinson also finished in double figures with 16 points along with four rebounds and two assists.

As a team, the Tigers shot 50 percent, 28 of 56, from the field and hit 18 of 22 free throws for an 82 percent mark.

UWA blocked five shots with Domonique Alexander accounting for four of them. Coupled with the turnovers, the UWA defense has become a clear calling card for the Tigers this season and it's not without reason.

"It started from day one of practice. The first two weeks, we didn't do anything offensively," said Sharpe. "We established defending would be our ticket to do anything in conference."

There will be no midweek games during final exam week on the UWA campus, so the Tigers will wait until Saturday for their next game as they travel to Clinton, Miss. to take on Mississippi College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Audio will be available on ESPN 104.9.
