Tigers roar to road GSC victory over MC, 86-60

CLINTON, Miss. – The West Alabama Tigers took to the road for the first time in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action and captured a mentally gritty 86-60 victory over the Mississippi College Choctaws Saturday night in the A.E. Wood Coliseum.

UWA improves to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the GSC while MC falls to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

The Tigers overcame foul trouble from their forwards and an 18-9 difference in favor of the Choctaws from the free throw line to earn the win.

"It was an issue, but we did enough," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "We had a huge contribution from DeAndre Harper and Charles Tripp got some time he hasn't normally gotten because of fouling tonight. We were able to weather it and get through it with no major damage. We had no one foul out, but it was a major issue down the stretch."

Despite the tough luck calls, West Alabama had to show some resolve in order to pull away in the second half.

"It's tough, because I will be the chief of all sinners and very first one to be complaining about it," said Sharpe. "I tell you, you just have to have some mental toughness about yourself and you can't get bogged down with the officiating. All you can control is your attitude and your effort."

Charles Eaton led all scorers with 34 points and added five rebounds and two assists. Josh Fleming turned in a terrific outing as well with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Gavin Robinson finished with 15 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Harper added 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and a block.

"It makes things so much easier for you team and takes pressure from you offensively," said Sharpe about his usual three top scorers. "That's great, but we kind of need a Sean Cranney to be able to make a shot or a Jake (Jobling) to make a shot. It was a positive tonight with DeAndre Harper making a few shots. Maybe he can plug in a few points. We're going to need some contributions from some other guys just every now and then to make a shot to keep the defense honest."

Stacey Mack led the Choctaws with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Tigers step out of conference play Monday in Pruitt Hall with a matchup against Lane College. The Dragons won their previous battle 79-70 in Jackson, Tenn. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
