Mississippi College Survives Tiger Comeback Attempts in 80-76 Win

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College built double digit leads twice and withstood West Alabama rallies on both occasions on the way to an 80-76 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

Mississippi College improved to 4-4 overall, 1-2 in GSC play, with the victory. West Alabama dropped to 3-6 and 1-2.

"I am very frustrated," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Mississippi College did the things they had to do to win the game and we did the things we needed to do to let them win it.

"We made some runs at them, but they played consistently throughout," Cram said. "It's hard to find a positive right now. It's disappointing, but we will continue to work on fundamentals and our intensity level."

Despite going 3:30 without a field goal and enduring a 1-for-9 shooting slump midway through the period, West Alabama only trailed 19-16 after the first quarter.

Mississippi College stretched its lead to 13 points with 6:32 left in the first half before UWA went on a 12-2 run and limited the Lady Choctaws to just 1-of-9 from the floor to erase the deficit and trail 37-35 at the half.

The Lady Choctaws outscored West Alabama 21-12 in the third period to take a 58-47 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game. The Tigers failed to make a field goal in the final 4:33 of the third quarter.

Mississippi College stretched its lead back to 13 points in the fourth quarter before West Alabama rallied to cut the lead to 78-74 on a Kim Parrish baseline jumper with 34.3 seconds left to play. Each team made a pair of free throws over the next three possessions to account for the final score.

UWA had the final two scoring opportunities of the game, but Marianne Ward's shot was blocked by Kelley Allen with 7.9 seconds left and Kierra Groce's offering was rejected by Lauran Sheriff with 5.0 seconds left.

West Alabama shot 41 percent (27-of-65) from the floor, while limiting the Lady Choctaws to just 36 percent (25-of-69), but the Tigers turned the ball over 27 times, resulting in 20 MC points. UWA outrebounded the Lady Choctaws 54-40.

Kim Parrish led West Alabama scorers with 19 points, followed by Elaine Field and Tazsa Garrett-Hammett with 12 apiece. Groce chipped in 10 and collected nine rebounds. Sydney Bozeman had 11 rebounds for UWA.

"Tazsa was in foul trouble all night," Cram said, "but she was going against a senior and a senior is usually going to win that battle over the course of a game. I thought Kim (Parrish) took the ball to the rim well."

Zariah Matthews and Ieisha Lacey had 18 points each to lead Mississippi College. Allen had 13 rebounds and Zan Ratcliffe seven assists.

West Alabama steps out of GSC play to host Miles College Wednesday at Pruitt Hall Gym. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
