Tigers Sweep Day-Night Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Brock Montgomery got three hits in the opener and Taylor Stafford three in the nightcap to lead West Alabama to a sweep of a day-night doubleheader Friday at Tartt Field. UWA defeated Lindenwood, 2-1, in the first game and beat Miles College, 10-2, in the second.

West Alabama improved to 3-2 with the sweep. Lindenwood is 1-3 and Miles dropped to 3-1. The Tigers travel to Americus, Georgia for another split doubleheader Sunday against Kentucky Wesleyan and Georgia Southwestern.

Tiger leadoff man Nick Delgado hit Lindenwood's first pitch out of the ballpark to give UWA an early 1-0 lead in the opener. Delgado scored the only other Tiger run in the third inning when he singled and scored on a double off the bat of Dylan Little. Montgomery had three of seven UWA hits in the game.

Lindenwood scored a single run in the second inning when Rayce Singbush was hit by a pitch, doubled to third by Bobby Lane and scored on a ground ball by Paul Sherwood.

"Anytime you can win two it's a good day," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "I thought our guys came ready to play and stayed focused through two very different kind of baseball games."

West Alabama sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring six runs, to essentially put the game away against Miles in the second inning. The Tigers added two runs in the seventh and single runs in the sixth and eighth. Little and Stafford both had two-run singles in UWA's big inning.

Evan Miller (1-1) worked seven innings to earn the pitching win over Lindenwood, allowing one run, striking out three and scattering four hits. Colton Morgan (1-1) picked up the win in the nightcap, working three innings in relief of starter Seth Holbert, who went two scoreless frames. Morgan, one of five Tiger pitchers in the second game, allowed one hit, an unearned run and struck out five.

"All our pitchers did good work. It was good to see Evan Miller come back and handle himself the way we expect him to after a rough outing in Florida," Rundles said. "It was also good to get a lot of people playing time and at bats in the second game. Those will be valuable as the season goes along."

Lindenwood starter Austin Georgen (0-1) and Miles starter William Donahoo (0-1) absorbed the losses.

Little had three hits in the doubleheader and drove in three runs. He also stole three bases.

Miles managed just two hits and scored single runs in the third and seventh innings, both unearned. Ryan Sosnowski and Drew Quinones had two hits apiece for Lindenwood.
