King's Career High Not Enough for UWA in Loss to UNA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama's Sydney King scored a career high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as North Alabama defeated the Tigers, 83-73, in a Gulf South Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

While King was connecting on 13-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free throw line, North Alabama freshman Ivy Wallen was pouring in 28 for the Lions to compliment a 20-pont performance by KeKe Gunter. Wallen was 12-of-15 from the free throw line, hitting nine of those in the last six and one-half minutes.

"Sydney is really a guard at heart, but she is capable of going down to play the post," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "When we signed her those were the kind of numbers we expected. That's why we signed her."

The win improved North Alabama to 17-7 overall, 11-7 in GSC play. West Alabama lost its sixth straight game, dipping to 6-18 and 3-14.

The difference in the game came at the free throw line and on the offensive glass. North Alabama made 19-of-26 free throws and West Alabama converted 13-of-22. The Lions collected 19 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Tigers 45-33 overall.

"They get those free throws because of offensive rebounding. It was a big difference," Cram said. "If you don't want to work, you are not going to win, and we chose not to today."

West Alabama jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first 3:58 of the game, limiting UNA to just 1-of-12 from the floor in the first five minutes. West Alabama shot 61 percent from the floor in the first quarter while holding the Lions to 27 percent. UWA led by 14 points at 6:08 in the first period.

North Alabama went on a 12-4 run to open the second quarter, taking its first lead of the game at 27-26 with 6:35 left before halftime. The Lions stretched the advantage to 41-36 by the end of the second quarter, outscoring UWA 26-14 in the period and 46-28 over the second and third periods.

The Lions led by as many as 13 points with 4:03 left in the game after West Alabama had cut the UNA advantage to 64-60 with 6:37 to play. The Tigers would get no closer as UNA made 13-of-14 free throws down the stretch.

Ariel Wilson was the only other UWA player in double figures with 17 points. Kierra Groce and Chloe Culpepper had five rebounds each.

Michaela DeKilder collected a game-high 10 rebounds for North Alabama. Wallen added eight assists and five rebounds to her 28 points.

West Alabama travels to West Georgia (11-10, 10-7) on Monday. UNA is host to West Florida (19-5, 14-4) on Thursday.
