UWG Completes Season Sweep of UWA Women's Hoops, 91-77

CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia fought off two West Alabama comebacks, completing the season sweep over the Tigers with a 91-77 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory at the Coliseum on Monday.

With the win, the Wolves extend their winning streak to three, improving to 12-10 overall and 11-7 in the league. The Tigers fall to 6-19 on the season, dropping to 3-15 in GSC play.

"We tried to create scoring opportunities, but turnovers really hurt our chances," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Although we mounted a comeback, there wasn't a whole lot of good that came out of this one."

Back-to-back three-point plays from West Georgia began a 16-3 run, pushing the Wolves out to 13-point advantage by the first media timeout. UWG led by as many as 16 by the end of the first quarter and continued to keep the Tigers at bay, converting 50 percent of shots from the field while UWA hit just 30 percent.

The Tigers cut the deficit down to single digits with just under two minutes left in the second period after a fast break layup by Sydney King. After an Ariel Wilson field goal, King was sent to the line, converting both attempts to bring the margin to 37-33 at the intermission.

West Alabama out-rebounded West Georgia 14-4 through the second period, helping the Tigers out-score the Wolves 22-12. After lopsided shooting percentages at the end of the opening ten minutes, neither side held an advantage from the floor or beyond the arc as both UWA and UWG shot 36 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

Four minutes into the third, Peyton Parker hit a long-range three to pull the Tigers within one. However, back-to-back three pointers by Jessica Brown extended the hole back to five points. Brown exploded for 11 points through the third quarter, leading the Wolves into the fourth with a 61-51 lead.

With 6:23 to play, the Tigers cut the lead back down to nine points, but UWG would outscore UWA 21-16 the rest of the way to secure the 91-77 conference win.

West Georgia took advantage of 18 West Alabama turnovers for 20 points throughout the contest. The Wolves edged the Tigers from the floor, going 27-54 (50%) while UWA held a slim advantage from three, converting 11-20 (55%). Both sides shot lights out from the line, with UWA hitting 18-20 (90%) to UWG's 27-32 (85%).

Four Tigers posted double-digit scoring numbers as Catherine Taylor and Wilson each posted 15 points. Jenna Bradberry and Chloe Culpepper each pitched in 12 points. Taylor also led West Alabama in rebounding, picking up seven boards in the loss.

Brown led all scorers with 27, beating her season average of 10.9 points-per-game. Aysha Harris contributed 17 points, while De'Ashia Jones finished with 16.

The Tigers will continue on the road, taking on Lee in GSC play on Thursday. Tip off at Paul Dana Walker Arena is set for 5 p.m.
