Tigers Get 20 Hits in 16-7 Win over Kentucky Wesleyan

AMERICUS, Ga. – West Alabama rapped out 20 hits and survived six errors to notch a 16-7 college baseball victory over Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday at Hurricane Stadium on the Georgia Southwestern State campus.
 
The win is the third straight for UWA (4-2). Kentucky Wesleyan dropped to 1-2.
 
Taylor Stafford rapped out four hits and drove in five runs to lead the West Alabama attack. The junior from Columbus, Mississippi, now has 15 RBI in just six games. Dylan Little and Marcus Morrisette chipped in three hits, while Tyler Lee had two.
 
West Alabama jumped on Kentucky Wesleyan early. Luke Phillips and Morrisette drove in runs with singles in the top of the first before Stafford hit his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the top of the second.
 
The Panthers struck back in the bottom of the second inning, using a pair of hit batters, three hits and two UWA errors to score five runs and take a 5-4 lead.
 
Kentucky Wesleyan chased UWA starter Braxton Wallace in the bottom of the third inning, scoring another run to take a 6-4 lead, but the Tigers answered with three in the top of the fourth inning. Stafford drove in two more runs with a single and Little's groundout drove in another to give UWA a 7-6 lead.
 
UWA scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before picking up three more in the top of the seventh. Brock Montgomery hit his second homer of the year in the fifth. Stafford doubled and scored on a Little triple in the sixth.
 
In the seventh Lee doubled in a run, Joel Murphy's grounder scored Montgomery and Lee scored on a wild pitch to give UWA a 12-7 lead.
 
Chris Simon picked up his first run batted in at West Alabama with a pinch-hit single in the top of the eighth, scoring Little. Simon later scored on a wild pitch to make it 14-7 Tigers. UWA closed out the scoring in the ninth on an RBI single by Stafford and a ground out by Simon. Ryan Hughes also doubled in the inning.
 
Leighton Lary (1-0) earned the West Alabama pitching win in relief. Lary allowed three hits and one run in 2.1 innings pitched. Kentucky Wesleyan reliever Sammy Holder (0-1) absorbed the loss, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits.
 
Seth Campbell had three hits to lead a 12-hit Kentucky Wesleyan attack. Nathan Stemle, Josh Galvin and Adam Brown chipped in two hits apiece. Galvin drove in a pair of runs.
 
The Tigers were scheduled to meet Georgia Southwestern later Sunday afternoon.
