Tigers and Statesmen Split GSC Baseball Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Four West Alabama players had two hits apiece and Tyler Lee homered as the Tigers defeated Delta State, 10-5, in the second game to earn a Gulf South doubleheader split with the Statesmen Saturday at Tartt Field. DSU won the opener, 6-4.

The split leaves West Alabama 6-4 overall, 1-1 in GSC play. Delta State is 7-2 and 1-1. The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.

"I thought we played better and that's what we needed to do today," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We were good offensively and played a lot better on defense. We still need to find a way to put up zeroes when our pitchers have been spotted runs."

Delta State took advantage of a three-run seventh inning to secure the win in game one. Dakota Glore drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single and Tyler Brown drove in another with a single. Brown also homered in the game, a two-run shot in the fourth inning.

West Alabama had three-run outbursts in the second and sixth innings to put away game two. Lee hit a solo home run, his first of the year in the third, followed by a run-scoring double by Nick Delgado and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dylan Little.

Back-to-back RBI doubles by Little and Joel Murphy plated three runs for the Tigers in the sixth inning of game two. Little's drove in a pair, giving him three for the game. Delgado, Taylor Stafford, Little and Marcus Morrisette all had two hits in the nightcap for UWA.

Luke Phillips collected three hits and drove in a run for the Tigers in the game one loss. Stafford had two more hits in the opener, giving him a 4-for-9 day at the plate in the doubleheader.

Brown was the only player for DSU with multiple hits in the first game. Josh Russell had a double and a single for the Statesmen in game two.

Delta starter Corey Beard (2-0) earned the pitching win in game one, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.2 innings. He also struck out five and walked one. West Alabama reliever Jonathan Porter (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in three innings pitched.

Tiger reliever Brady Badon (2-0) picked up the UWA win in the nightcap, working one inning of scoreless relief. Badon was one of nine pitchers used by the Tigers in the twinbill. DSU starter Tre Hobbs (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five.

Five UWA pitchers tied the school record for hit batsmen in a game with six in game one. The last time Tiger pitchers hit six batters in a game was against Delta State in 2005.
