Waites Outing Leads UWA to 7-0 Win over Montevallo

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Freshman right-hander Cole Waites pitched seven scoreless innings as three West Alabama pitchers combined for a 7-0 shutout over Montevallo in college baseball Wednesday at Tartt Field.

In his first collegiate start, Waites (1-0) scattered four hits while striking out six and walking one to pick up his first pitching win at West Alabama. Jonathan Porter and Brady Badon followed up with scoreless innings to preserve the shutout. Falcon starter Justin Whitley (2-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings.

"Cole came out and set the tone. He commanded both sides of the plate with his fast ball," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "He pitched ahead in the count all day.

"After how we pitched over the weekend against Delta State, that was the kind of outing we needed and it came from a true freshman," Rundles said.

West Alabama opened the scoring in the second inning when Lincoln Stubbs' single drove in Marcus Morrisette, who had also singled to open the inning.

The Tigers added four runs on just two hits in fifth inning. Josh Winningham had a sacrifice fly and a pair of runs scored when Falcon shortstop Collin Dupree couldn't handle Morrisette's grounder. Morrisette ended up scoring the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.

UWA added two more in the eighth on an RBI bunt single by Nick Delgado and a ground out by Luke Latham.

Delgado, Stubbs and Taylor Stafford had two hits each in an eight-hit West Alabama attack. Stafford and Stubbs both doubled.

Chad Wagner and Sebastian Samuels had two hits apiece for Montevallo. One of Samuels' hits was a double.

West Alabama continues its seven-game homestand by hosting Mississippi College in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. Montevallo hosts Lander in a three game series at home beginning Friday.
