Shannon Drives in Six as DSU Beats UWA, 10-6, to Take Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Zack Shannon went 3-for-5 and drove in six runs to lead No. 23 Delta State to a 10-6 Gulf South Conference college baseball victory over West Alabama Sunday at Tartt Field.

Shannon, the Statesmen first baseman, belted a three-run home run, a two-run single and had a sacrifice fly to pace a 14-hit Statesman attack. Second baseman Emil Ellis had three hits and drew three walks to reach base six times for Delta State.

DSU improved to 7-2 overall, 2-1 in GSC play with the win. West Alabama dropped to 6-5 and 1-2. The Statesmen took the series with the Sunday victory after the two teams had split Saturday's doubleheader.

Delta State scored runs in bunches on Sunday, pushing across three in the first inning, three in the fourth and three more in the ninth. The Statesmen's single run came in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Ellis.

UWA second baseman Joel Murphy had three of the Tigers' 12 hits, two of which were bunt singles. Designated hitter Luke Phillips had a pair of hits and drove in three runs for West Alabama.

After getting down 7-2, West Alabama closed the gap to 7-6 with a four-run outburst in the sixth inning. Brock Montgomery tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Lee. Phillips drove in two runs with a single and Josh Winningham another with a single.

Delta State starter Seth Birdsong (1-0) worked five innings to earn his first win of the year, allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six. UWA starter Layton Dill (1-1) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits, while walking four and striking out two in 3.1 innings pitched.

West Alabama used six pitchers and DSU five in a game that took almost four-and-a-half hours to play.

West Alabama continues its seven-game homestand by hosting Montevallo Wednesday at Tartt Field. First pitch is 2 p.m. Delta State is host to Southern Arkansas on Wednesday.
