UWA Sweeps MC on Back-to-Back Walk-off Bunts

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama used walk-off bunts in both games to sweep Mississippi College in a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. West Alabama won game one, 10-9, and game two, 9-8.

On a modest three-game winning streak, West Alabama is 9-5 overall and 3-2 in GSC play. Mississippi College dropped to 2-12 and 0-5. Game three of the series is Sunday at Tartt Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Luke Phillips got down a bunt with one out in the bottom of the ninth in game one to score Taylor Stafford with the game-winning run, completing a comeback where the Tigers were down 6-1 after an inning and a half.

Dylan Little got down the two-out bunt in the bottom of the seventh to score Josh Winningham for the game two victory. GSC doubleheaders are nine and seven innings, respectively.

"I was proud of our guys for continuing to fight all day long and for executing properly when it was time to execute," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "I am still concerned about our pitchers not being able to put up zeroes after being staked to a good lead.

"Anytime you can win two games in this league is a good day," Rundles said. "No matter how it happens or how long it takes. You have to enjoy the victories because they are hard to earn."

West Alabama jumped to a 6-0 lead in game two after sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning. Mississippi College scored one in the second and five in the third inning to tie the score at 6-6.

The Choctaws took an 8-6 lead in the top of the sixth in game two on an RBI single by Hunter Wilson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Grant Barber, but UWA answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Nick Delgado drove in a run with a double and Little another on a ground ball out.

After spotting MC the 6-1 lead in the opener, West Alabama scored four in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 7-6 advantage. Phillips hit his first career homer, a solo shot in the second, and Joel Murphy belted a three-run homer, also in the second.

Mississippi College regained the lead on a two-run homer by Chance Whitten in the fourth inning and added another in the ninth when Hunter Austin drove in Whitten, who had doubled, with a groundout.

A trio of Mississippi College errors on one play in the ninth led to West Alabama's game winner in game one. Delgado and Phillips had hits for the Tigers in the frame.

Jonathan Porter (1-2) and Brady Badon (3-0) picked up the West Alabama pitching wins in relief. Choctaw relievers Hunter Lacefield (0-1) and Hunter Mullis (0-2) took the losses.

Delgado and Phillips both had three hits in the two games for West Alabama. Both Phillips and Murphy's homers were their first of the season.

Whitten went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader for Mississippi College. Hunter Sykes also had four hits for the Choctaws. Whitten's home run was his fourth.
