Delgado Single Caps Third Walk-off Win for UWA over MC This Weekend

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Nick Delgado's line drive single past a drawn-in Mississippi College infield capped a four-run ninth inning as West Alabama defeated the Choctaws, 5-4, Sunday at Tartt Field. The walk-off win was the third in the series for the Tigers in two days.

Trailing 4-1 going to the bottom of the ninth inning, West Alabama took advantage of four hits, two walks, a balk and a hit by pitch to notch the come-from-behind victory. Delgado's single scored Tyler Sims, who had bunted for a hit three batters earlier.

The Tigers scored walk-off wins in both games of the Saturday doubleheader, winning the first game, 10-9, and the second, 9-8.

"A win is a win, no matter how you get them," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "The normal tendency when you are down is to go the other way, but this team plays to the last out."

West Alabama has now won four straight games, improving to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the Gulf South Conference play. Mississippi College is 2-13 and 0-6.

Marcus Morrisette started the big ninth inning for UWA by doubling over right fielder Casey Echols head to open the inning. Luke Phillips singles in Morrisette and later scored on an Ingram balk. Joel Murphy took a bases-loaded pitch to the batting helmet to drive in a run before Delgado's game winner.

Mississippi College scored single runs in the third, fifth, eighth and ninth innings to build the 4-1 lead behind starting pitcher Jake Fraze, who went eight-plus innings before giving way to Zack Ingram in the ninth. After Fraze allowed three runs, Ingram (0-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing the winning run and not retiring any of the four batters he faced in the ninth.

Layton Dill (2-1) got one out in the top of the ninth to notch the win. He was the final of four UWA pitchers. Starter Colton Morgan went 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. Jonathan Porter and Jay Booth also worked in relief for the Tigers.

"Colton did an outstanding job and set the tone," Rundles said. "He gave us what we needed and kept us in it. The bullpen guys were outstanding. It was just a great team series sweep."

Morrisette had three hits to pace an eight-hit West Alabama attack. Sims and Delgado had two hits apiece.

Hunter Sykes had two hits for Mississippi College to give him six for the series. Blaine Crim chipped in two hits and drove in a run.

West Alabama returns to action Saturday in a GSC doubleheader at Valdosta State. First pitch is set for noon central time. Mississippi College is host to Spring Hill on Wednesday.
