Waites, Lary Combine to Shut Out Valdosta; Tigers, Blazers Split

VALDOSTA, Ga. – True freshmen Cole Waites and Leighton Lary combined on a two-hit shutout as West Alabama defeated Valdosta State, 1-0, in game two to earn a split of Saturday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Billy Grant Field. VSU won the opener, 2-0.

With the split, both UWA and VSU are 11-6 overall and 5-3 in GSC play. The Tigers and Blazers play the rubber game of the series Sunday at noon central time. Tiger fans can listen live on ESPN 104.9, via the ESPN1049 App or at www.espn1049.com. There will be no video feed.

Waites (2-0) worked 6.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits while striking out eight and walking three. The true freshman from Lawrenceville, Georgia, has now thrown 13.2 consecutive innings without allowing a run. He has not allowed an earned run in 17.2 innings this season.

Lary, a true freshman from Mobile, Alabama, earned his first collegiate save. Blazer starter Austin Hamilton was the hard-luck loser, allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out 11.

"It was a grownup day for a couple of freshmen," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Cole Waites showed a lot of guts today making outstanding pitches in clutch situations and Leighton Lary got ahead and made a big pitch when he needed to."

Waites coaxed a double play with bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning, then struck out two with a Blazer runner at third with one out in the fifth.

"Today was the first time we have gotten back-to-back quality starts this year," Rundles said. "Seth (Holbert) pitched well despite taking the loss, and Jonathan Porter gave us three good innings in the opener."

Holbert (0-1) was tagged with the game one loss, allowing three hits and two runs over five innings. He walked one and struck out six. Porter worked the final three frames, striking out two and not allowing a hit. Valdosta State starter Hunter Jones (2-0) picked up the win and Beau Blair his third save.

Valdosta scored single runs in the first and fifth innings of the opener. Kendall Herron opened the first with an infield single and scored on a first and third double steal. Elias Macias doubled to start the fifth and scored on a single by Tyler Morris.

West Alabama wasted leadoff doubles from Nick Delgado in the fourth inning and Joel Murphy in the sixth, managing just three hits in the first game.

West Alabama's game-winner in game two came in the second inning when Delgado singled in Josh Winningham. The Tigers got four hits, including two by Luke Phillips, in game two.

"We found a way to battle and get a run up there in the second game against a really good pitcher," Rundles said. "We showed some character against probably the best left-hander we have seen."
