Stafford and Little Go Deep, Pitchers Rally Back in 8-6 UWA Win at Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Tyler Stafford had a three-run home run and Dylan Little a solo shot in a five-run seventh inning to lead West Alabama (1-1) to an 8-6 college baseball victory over Saint Leo (1-1) Saturday at Southard Stadium.

The homers were the first of the season for both Stafford and Little, who also doubled. West Alabama got 10 hits, five of them in the big seventh inning. Included on those were a pinch-hit double by Brock Montgomery and a pinch-hit single by Joel Murphy.

Saint Leo used a home run, double, bunt single and a sacrifice fly to score four runs in the bottom of the second dinning. Zach Scott opened the scoring for the Lions with his third home run of the year, the seventh of the series for SLU.

"The game came down to two situations," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We answered their four-spot, then Braxton Wallace and Brady Badon put up zeroes until we had our big inning.

"Stafford and Little's homers were obviously huge, but Montgomery and Murphy coming off the bench to get pinch hits was also big," Rundles said. "Coming in, I wasn't sure how we would pitch, but I thought we would swing the bats and play solid defense."

Badon (1-0) earn the pitching win in relief of Wallace, who made his first start for UWA. Saint Leo reliever Alec Lamrouex (0-1) was tagged with the loss after getting just one out and giving up four runs in relief of Lion starter Tyler Bauman.

Wallace and Badon combined to sit down 13 straight Saint Leo hitters after a double play to end the third inning. Wallace retired nine straight and went 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. He struck out four and walked four. Badon allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four in 3.2 innings.

West Alabama put up a single run in the fourth inning when Josh Winningham ripped a triple to score Luke Phillips, who had been hit by a pitch.

The Tigers also put up single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Murphy walked and scored on a wild pitch in the eighth. Little led off the ninth with a double and scored when Montgomery drew a bases-loaded walk.

A two-run homer by Lane Stancil in the eighth inning provided Saint Leo's final runs. Stancil, Scott and Derek Gibree all had two hits for the Lions. Stancil and Scott drove in two runs apiece.

West Alabama and Saint Leo play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 11 a.m. Right-handed junior Layton Dill is scheduled to make his first UWA start.
