Saint Leo Takes Series With 9-8 Extra Innings Win Over West Alabama

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Dylan Harris coaxed a high hopper into left field to score Derek Gibree in the bottom of the 10th inning and hand Saint Leo a 9-8 extra innings college baseball win over West Alabama Sunday at Southard Stadium.

West Alabama (1-2) opens its home season Wednesday when Miles College visits Tartt Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Saint Leo (2-1) plays the fourth of a six-game home stand to open the season by hosting Lee on Friday.

West Alabama sent the game into extra innings by scoring four runs in the top of the ninth inning on two-run home runs by Taylor Stafford and Marcus Morrisette, the second homers of the game for both. Stafford now has three on the season and Morrisette two.

"I was proud of the way we fought back in a good baseball game between two good baseball teams," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "It's early in the season, so there's a lot left to be played.

"We battled, they battled," Rundles said. "That's just baseball. We will go home and get ready to play on Tuesday."

Morrisette put together a three-hit day with three runs batted in. Both of Stafford's hits left the park and he drove in three runs as well. Joel Murphy also had three hits for West Alabama, while Dylan Little chipped in a double and a triple.

Harris and Alex Mata had three hits apiece for Saint Leo. Both had a pair of doubles for the Lions. Derek Gibree homered for Saint Leo, his second of the season.

Reliever Michael Mann (1-0) picked up the pitching win for Saint Leo, allowing no runs and just one hit over 1.1 innings. West Alabama reliever Jonathan Porter (0-1) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits while striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.
