Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UAH Blisters Nets for a 78-70 Women’s Basketball Win at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Katie Speegle scored 17 points and Alabama Huntsville shot 61 percent from the floor on the way to a 78-70 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory at West Alabama Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The Lady Chargers improved to 5-17 overall, 4-13 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped its fifth straight game and fell to 6-17, 3-13.

Alabama Huntsville converted 29-of-47 field goal attempts and had four scorers in double figures, led by Speegle, who scored 13 of her 17 in the second half and had six rebounds. Loren Foster scored 16 for UAH, followed by Baylee Johnson with 14 and Chandler Elder with 11.

"We couldn't guard out shadow," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "Their post players just kicked our butt in the second half."

Speegle made 7-of-8 field goals, while Tiger post players Chloe Culpepper, Caleb Washington and Emilee Cunningham combined of make 6-of-8. UWA outscored the Lady Chargers 40-38 in the paint and 19-0 on second chance points.

A lack of perimeter defense drove the final nail in the Tigers coffin. After cutting the UAH lead to three late in the fourth quarter, UWA allowed two uncontested three pointers that ended with the Lady Chargers leading by 10 points and putting the game away.

"We get within three and then give up back-to-back threes without a dribble," Cram said. "We would get one thing fixed and then something else would go south."

Although the lead changed hands six times, Alabama Huntsville led for over 35 minutes of the game.

Ariel Wilson scored a game-high 21 points for West Alabama. Sydney King chipped in 11 and Culpepper 10. Culpepper collected six rebounds.

West Alabama is host to North Alabama Saturday at 2 p.m. UAH travels to West Georgia.
