Tigers Sweep CBU in GSC Baseball Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Seth Holbert struck out 10 in six innings in the first game and Joel Murphy drove in five runs in the nightcap as West Alabama swept Christian Brothers, 6-0 and 12-10, in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at Tartt Field.

The third game of the series between the Bucs (7-15, 3-8) and the Tigers (14-7, 7-4) is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday.

Three West Alabama pitchers combined to shut out CBU in the opener, allowing just five hits while walking two and striking out 15. Holbert (1-1) started and worked six innings, allowing no runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts. Jonathan Porter struck out five in two innings of work and Braxton Wallace got the final three outs. Starter Cole Waites (3-0), the first of six Tiger pitchers in the second game, picked up the win.

"We pitched well in the opener, not so much in the second game, especially late. I wasn't too pleased that it took three pitchers to get three outs in the last inning of game two." UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Seth Holbert was lights out for six innings in the opener and Jonathan Porter followed him with two good innings."

Bucs starter Peyton Sanderlin (3-2) took the loss in game one allowing nine hits and three runs while walking one and striking out six. Christian Brothers starter Patrick Gurley (1-3) was the loser in game two.

Tiger designated hitter Luke Phillips went 5-for-8 in the two games with three doubles and three runs batted in. Murphy drove in his five runs in the nightcap by going 3-for-3 with a triple.

"Luke Phillips is seeing the ball really well and Joel Murphy got clutch hits for us in the second game," Rundles said. "Nick Delgado continues to do his job. He has been on base in all 21 games this season."

A redshirt freshman from Saraland, Alabama, Phillips is 13 for his last 20 and has raised his batting average to a team-leading .448.

Nick Delgado had three UWA hits in the second game and drove in two runs. Taylor Stafford hit his fifth home run of the year and Dylan Little his second, both solo shots in the nightcap. Stafford had four hits in the doubleheader. Tyler Lee had a pair of hits in game one and Marcus Morrisette in game two.

CBU trailed 12-5 going into the final inning of the second game, but rallied to score five runs off three Tiger pitchers in the frame to cut the score to the final margin.
