Tigers Complete Sweep of CBU with 5-2 Victory

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Layton Dill worked 6.2 innings of relief without allowing an earned run as West Alabama completed a Gulf South Conference series sweep of Christian Brothers with a 5-2 college baseball win at Tartt Field Monday.

The Tigers won for the fourth straight game, improving to 15-7 and 8-4 in GSC play. Christian Brothers is 7-16 and 3-9.

"The key to the game was Layton Dill coming in and working over six innings with no walks," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "It was something that we had to have at that time."

Dill (3-1) earned the win after relieving UWA starter Colton Morgan, who walked four of the five batters he faced in a third of an inning.  Dill scattered five hits and allowed an unearned run while striking out 6.

JC Redden got the final two outs of the game to earn his first UWA save, striking out CBU's leading hitter Taylor King on three pitches with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning. CBU reliever Gil Erwin (2-4) took the loss.

Christian Brothers jumped to a 1-0 lead when Morgan delivered a bases-loaded walk to Casey Goodwin in the top of the first inning. West Alabama answered with a run without the aid of a hit in the bottom of the first.

CBU scored its last run of the game in the top of the second when King singled in Taylor Angley-Holman. The Tigers answered with a single run in the bottom of the second when Josh Winningham's sacrifice fly chased Marcus Morrisette, who had singled to begin the inning.

West Alabama took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Winningham had an infield single to open the inning and Joel Murphy sacrificed him to second. A Nick Delgado single against the CBU defensive shift plated Winningham.

The Tigers added two more in the eighth when Brock Montgomery doubled in Taylor Stafford, who had doubled to open the inning. Morrisette then singled in Montgomery to close out the scoring. Morrisette had two hits to lead an eight-hit UWA attack.

"It's tough to play on a Monday morning, but I thought we came out ready to play," Rundles said. "MJ (Morrisette), Brock (Montgomery) and (Nick) Delgado had three great at bats when  we needed them and JC (Redden) threw three quality pitches to a great hitter to close it out."

Angley-Holmes had three of Christian Brothers eight hits. King chipped in two more.

West Alabama opens an eight-game road swing Wednesday against Miles College at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham. CBU is host to Bethel (Tenn.) on Wednesday.
