Tigers Win Fifth Straight, 15-8, Over Miles

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – West Alabama rapped out 18 hits on the way to a 15-8 college baseball victory over Miles College Wednesday at historic Rickwood Field.

The victory was the fifth straight for the Tigers, now 16-7. Miles evened its record at 8-8.

"I was proud of our guys. We came out and did what we needed to do to get the job done in a midweek game," Tiger coach Gary Rundles said. "A lot of guys had the chance to contribute today and that goes a long way as we continue to look at the bigger picture."

With the scored tied at 1-1 after four innings, West Alabama used six hits to score five runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking a lead it would never relinquish. Luke Phillips, Tyler Lee, Dylan Little and Joel Murphy drove in runs in the frame.

Brock Montgomery drove in two runs in the top of the sixth to stretch in the UWA lead to 8-1, but Miles reciprocated by scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Tiger lead to 8-6. Roderick Ransom and Peyton Logan both had two RBI in the inning.

Nick Delgado doubled off the left field wall with two outs in the seventh and was chased by a hustle double by Taylor Stafford. Phillips drove Stafford in and UWA led 10-6.

Lee drove in his third run of the game as the Tigers scored three more runs in the eighth on just one hit.

Ryan Hughes had a pinch hit double and Luke Latham a pinch hit single to drive in runs in the West Alabama ninth, stretching the lead to 15-6. Miles scratched out two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.

Braxton Wallace (1-0) earned the pitching win for West Alabama, allowing no runs on three hits over three innings in relief of starter Leighton Lary. Miles starter Jacob Schuster (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs in six hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

Phillips and Stafford both had three hits to lead West Alabama. Little, Montgomery and Lee chipped in two hits apiece and Delgado had a pair of doubles.

Ryan Bargery, Reeves Brashear and Ransom had two hits each for the Golden Bears.

West Alabama remains on the road, traveling to North Alabama (14-7, 9-3) for a three-game GSC series Saturday and Sunday. UNA is one game ahead of UWA (8-4) in the conference standings. Miles travels to Benedict (S.C.) College for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.
