Waites Fans Career High as Tigers Split With UNA

FLORENCE, Ala. – West Alabama freshman right-hander Cole Waites struck out a career-high 10 batters in the second game as West Alabama and North Alabama split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Mike Lane Field.

UNA (15-9, 10-4) won the first game, 8-7, and UWA (17-8, 9-5) took the nightcap, 6-1. Sunday's rubber match is set for 1 p.m. with a possibility of at least a tie for first place in the GSC standings on the line with a West Alabama victory. The Tigers have won six of their last seven games.

From Lawrenceville, Georgia, Waites (4-0) picked up the win the in the second game by scattering four hits, allowing one run, striking out 10 and walking four in six innings of work. Waited and JC Redden allowed UNA just five hits. UNA starter Bradley Bailey (2-4) absorbed the loss, allowing five runs and six hits over three innings pitched.

"What else can you say about the way Cole Waites is performing right now," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "When a true freshman pitcher comes out and strikes out 10 against the top team in the league, that's pretty special."

Reigning GSC player of the week Luke Phillips homered, went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs in the nightcap. A redshirt freshman from Saraland, Alabama, Phillips was a triple away from the cycle. Marcus Morrisette tripled and drove in a run, while Taylor Stafford and Dylan Little doubled.

T.J. Lockett had three hits for North Alabama in the opener and was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader. Kyle Hubbuch hit his sixth home run of the year in the first game. Davis Elliott, Drake Tucker, Chris Blakey and Hubbuch all had two hits for the Lions in the first game.

UWA catcher Tyler Lee rapped out three hits and drove in a run in the first game. Stafford chipped in two hits in a 10-hit attack.

Tyler Joiner (7-0) earned the win in the first game despite allowing nine hits and six runs while walking six and striking out five over five innings. Channing Wall picked up his third save by getting the final three outs. UWA starter Seth Holbert (1-2) took the loss.

Sunday's game can be heard live on the Twin States leader, ESPN 104.9, with the pregame show starting at 12:50 p.m. There is no video feed scheduled for the game.
