UNA Takes GSC Baseball Series from UWA with 13-5 Win

FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama jumped out to a seven-run lead after three innings and never looked back on the way to a 13-5 Gulf South Conference college baseball victory over West Alabama Sunday at Mike Lane Field.

The win clinched the series over the Tigers, leaving UNA as the only team in the GSC not to have lost a series. The Lions are 16-9 overall, 11-4 and in the first place in the league. West Alabama is 17-9 and 9-6, tied for third in the conference.

After spotting West Alabama a run in the top of the first, North Alabama scored three in the bottom of the inning and four more in the second to take a 7-1 lead. The Lions scored twice in the fourth and seventh, along with single runs in the third and fifth.

West Alabama could not manage a rally, scoring single runs in five innings and leaving 15 runners on base.

UNA starter Devan Traglia (4-0) earned the pitching win despite allowing 11 hits and four runs while walking two and striking out three in six innings of work. UWA starter Layton Dill (2-2) took the loss after giving up five earned runs, six hits and two walks while getting just five outs.

T.J. Lockett, Drake Tucker, Brandt Holland and Peyton Sockwell had two hits apiece in a 13-hit UNA attack. Lockett reached base five times. Logan Carter, Kyle Hubbuch, Tucker and Holland each drove in two runs.

Marcus Morrisette and Joel Murphy each had three hits for West Alabama, who also got 13 hits. Josh Winningham chipped in two hits and Luke Phillips drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.

West Alabama plays the fifth of an eight-game road swing at William Carey on Wednesday. North Alabama is host to Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday.
