Stafford Leads West Alabama to 7-2 Win at William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Taylor Stafford drove in four runs and hit his sixth home run of the year to lead West Alabama to a 7-2 college baseball win over William Carey Wednesday at Milton Wheeler Field.

West Alabama improved to 18-9, snapping William Carey's winning streak at six games. Ranked ninth in the nation in NAIA, the Crusaders dropped to 22-6 while losing for just the second time in 20 games.

"We came out and took care of business against a good baseball team," West Alabama coach Gary Rundles said. "Taylor had a big day at the plate and our pitchers were around the plate. Now we get ready for a big conference weekend at Union."

West Alabama opened the scoring in the top of the first when Nick Delgado doubled and scored from second base on a ground out by Taylor Stafford. Delgado was moving on the pitch that turned into the first out of the inning.

William Carey answered in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Adrian Brown reached on an error and then ended up scoring on a groundout by Tyler Graves.

The Crusaders took advantage of two Tiger errors and a hit to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Stafford extended his hitting streak to 10 games and gave West Alabama a 4-2 lead with his sixth home run, a three-run shot over the right field wall in the top of the seventh off William Carey reliever Dylan Spiers.

The Tigers scored three runs on four straight two-out hits in the top of the ninth to salt the game away. Stafford and Dylan Little singled in runs and Dylan Little doubled one in in the frame.

Leighton Lary (2-1) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Colton Morgan. Lary worked two innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out one. WCU reliever Dylan Spiers (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on one hit, Stafford's homer.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play Friday, playing a doubleheader at Union. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. William Carey is host to the University of Mobile Friday at 2 p.m.
