UWA Baseball Splits at Union on Friday

JACKSON, Tenn. – West Alabama rapped out 14 hits on the way to an 11-5 victory in game one and Union relied on the long ball for a 6-2 win in game two as the Tigers and Bulldogs split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Friday at Fesmire Field.

The rubber game of the three-game series between UWA (19-10, 10-7) and Union (21-8, 10-6) is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday's game will be carried live on ESPN 104.9 or on the ESPN1049 App.

Leading 2-1 after three innings in the opener, West Alabama tacked on nine runs over the next three innings to put the game away. Marcus Morrisette and Tyler Lee both had two-run home runs for the Tigers, their third and second, respectively.

Luke Phillips and Joel Murphy tripled, while Taylor Stafford and Josh Winningham doubled for the Tigers. Dylan Little, Brock Montgomery, Phillips and Lee all had two hits apiece for UWA.

Jonathan Porter (2-2) picked up the pitching win in relief of Tiger starter Cole Waites in the opener. Porter allowed a run on three hits over 2.1 innings pitched. Union starter JR Miller (4-1) took the loss after giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits in 5.1 innings of work.

With West Alabama leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning in the second game, Union got back-to-back solo homers from Ryne Roper and Zach Wylie in the frame to take a 3-2 lead. A three-run home run from Zach Phillips in the sixth put the game away for the Bulldogs.

West Alabama's two runs came in the third when Montgomery doubled and Murphy singled to open the inning. Both would score on wild pitches.

Union starter Teddy Christie (7-1) worked 5.1 innings for the win, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven. Layton Dill (3-3) was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs on three hits while striking out eight in five innings. Marty Coursey struck out three over 1.2 innings to earn his second save.

Phillips had a pair of hits for West Alabama in the nightcap, making him 4-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Tiger leadoff hitter Nick Delgado's consecutive on base streak was snapped at 28 games when the senior from Pompano Beach went 0-4 in the second game. Stafford's 11-game hitting streak was snapped by an 0-4 outing in game two.
