Blazers Fend Off UWA Comeback to Win 10-8

VALDOSTA, Ga. – West Alabama's late-inning rally fell just short as Valdosta State held off the Tigers for a 10-8 Gulf South Conference college baseball victory Sunday at Billy Grant Field.
 
Valdosta State won the series with the victory, improving to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in league play. West Alabama is 11-7 and 5-4.
 
After trading the lead in the first two innings, Valdosta State took a 7-2 advantage on a grand slam home run by Max Abramson in the third inning and stretched that lead to 10-2 after seven innings.
 
West Alabama came roaring back, scoring four in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Marcus Morrisette represented the tying run for UWA at the plate with two outs and a runner on second in the ninth. Morrisette was called out on a check swing strikeout to end the game.
 
The Tigers collected nine hits in their final two at bats, with Dylan Little doubling in both the eighth and ninth innings. Taylor Stafford and Little doubled in runs in the eighth and Josh Winningham had an RBI single in the frame.
 
Nick Delgado had an RBI double in the ninth and another UWA run scored when Phillips hit into a double play.
 
Dalton Murray also homered for Valdosta State, a solo shot to open the seventh inning. Murray and Abramson had three hits each for the Blazers. Murray's homer was his third, Abramson's his first.
 
Stafford had three hits to lead a 12-hit West Alabama attack. Delgado, Phillips and Little each contributed two hits for the Tigers.
 
Valdosta State starter Troy Massaro (2-0) pitched seven innings to pick up the win, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out seven. Starter Colton Morgan (1-1), the first of seven Tiger pitchers, took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits.
 
West Alabama travels to Spring Hill (9-8) on Wednesday before returning to GSC play against Christian Brothers (7-13, 3-6) at home Saturday and Sunday. The midweek game at Spring Hill is scheduled for 3 p.m.
