Phillips, Morrisette Have Big Day in Tiger Win at Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. – Luke Phillips had four hits and Marcus Morrisette three doubles as West Alabama defeated Spring Hill, 8-4, in college baseball Wednesday at historic Stan Galle Field.

The win improves West Alabama to 12-7 with a Gulf South Conference series against Christian Brothers coming up this weekend. Spring Hill dropped to 9-9.

Both Phillips and Morrisette are from the Mobile area and both had big days for the home folks. In addition to four singles, Phillips also walked and drove in two runs. Morrisette had a double in each of his last three at bats and drove in a run.

Spring Hill opened the scoring with a pair of runs on three hits in the first inning. Conner Harrison drove in a run with a single and Daniel Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch.

West Alabama answered with two runs of its own in the top of the third. Taylor Stafford drove in Tyler Lee on a ground out and Luke Phillips chased Joel Murphy with his second single of the game.

Brock Montgomery gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, his third of the year. Phillips drove in his second run with his third single in the fifth to expand the UWA lead to 4-2.

Spring Hill cut the Tiger lead to 4-3 when Harrison doubled in Brennan Fontenot, but the Tigers answered in the top of the seventh inning.

Nick Delgado drew a one-out walk and was driven in when Stafford tripled to the gap in right center to extend the West Alabama lead to 5-3. Delgado's hitting streak ended at 13 games, but the seventh-inning walk extended his on base streak to 19 games.

The Tigers capped off the scoring when Morrisette drove in a run with his third double and Josh Winningham scored on a wild pitch.

Stafford's triple was his first. Montgomery added a single to his homer.

Tiger starter Colton Morgan (2-1) earned the pithing win, allowing just one earned run on four hits. He walked two and struck out four. Badger starter Justin Whitsett (3-2) took the loss.

Brandon Harigel, Rodriguez and Harrison had two hits each for Spring Hill.
