Tigers Climb GSC Standings After Sweep of Lee

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama climbed into second place alone in the Gulf South Conference standings by sweeping Lee in a doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. The Tigers won both games by a 7-3 score.

The Tigers are 13-7 in league play, two games behind league leading Delta State at 15-5. West Alabama is now 23-10 overall. Only DSU, at 24-8, has a better overall winning percentage than UWA. Lee is now 20-14 and 9-11.

The Tigers got home runs from Josh Winningham, Brock Montgomery and Taylor Stafford in game one, and then another in game two from Nick Delgado, but the key stat of the doubleheader may have been starting pitcher Seth Holbert going the distance in the seven-inning game.

"Anytime you can get a complete game in the seven-inning game and not have to go to your bullpen is huge," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Seth got in the hole early, but put up zeros for five innings, giving us a chance to come back and win."

Holbert (2-1) scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs over seven innings in the nightcap, while striking out eight and not walking a batter. Freshman Cole Waites (5-0) worked five innings for the win in the opener, allowing just two hits and no earned runs. He struck out six and walked two.

Lee starters Jumpei Akanuma (1-3) and Rob Gustitus (3-2) absorbed the losses.

Winningham's first homer of the year gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead after two innings in the opener. After Lee tied the game in the top of the third, West Alabama scored two in the bottom of the third and never trailed again.

"We got big hits all day when we needed them," Rundles said. "We were able to put enough hits together at crucial times in both games to get the sweep."

Montgomery's fourth home run of the year was a line drive over the right field wall in the sixth inning of game one. Winningham tripled in a run in the seventh before Stafford hit his seventh homer, a solo shot, in the bottom of the eighth.

Lee jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second game. Geremy Walton's double and Nathan Wierzgac's triple in the first inning were complimented by a sacrifice fly by Drew Johnson. Lee's only other run came on a solo homer by Jordan Howard in the top of the seventh, his fourth of the season.

Marcus Morrisette had three runs batted in for West Alabama in game two, chasing runners across the plate with a sacrifice fly, a single and a ground ball out. The Tigers put the game away with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by Delgado's third homer. Dylan Little and Joel Murphy also drove in runs in the frame.

Stafford was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader and scored five runs. Little was 4-for-7 and drove in two runs. Luke Phillips was 3-for-8.

Howard, Johnson and Walton all had three hits in the doubleheader for Lee.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Tartt Field.
