Game Recap: Baseball |

Dill, Delgado Lead Tigers to 7-4 Baseball Win at Shorter

ROME, Ga.Layton Dill allowed just one earned run over seven-plus innings and Nick Delgado was a home run shy of the cycle as West Alabama defeated Shorter, 7-4, in Gulf South Conference baseball action Saturday at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

West Alabama improved to 28-14 overall with the win, 17-10 in GSC play. Shorter dipped to 20-21 and 9-18.

Dill (4-3) allowed just one hit through the first six innings, sitting down 13 straight Shorter hitters at one point. He allowed just three hits and four runs, with only one of the runs being earned, while walking two and striking out two. Jonathan Porter got the final six outs for his fourth save. Shorter starter Tyler Buchanon (2-3) got just four outs and took the loss.

"That is the best I have seen Layton Dill pitch," UWA coach Gary Rundles said, "He took control, was consistent and pitched to contact. Porter came in a did what Porter does."

Both of Dills strikeouts came in the first inning, while the two walks were to the last two batters he faced in the eighth.

After walking in the first, Delgado tripled in the second inning, doubled in the fourth and singled in the sixth. He reached on a throwing error in his final at bat in the eighth. His triple drove in two runs and the single another as the senior from Pompano Beach, Florida, went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.

A sacrifice fly by Dylan Little drove in a single UWA run in the fifth inning and Taylor Stafford doubled in a run in the sixth to add to Delgado's RBI single.

Shorter cut the UWA lead to 5-3 in the seventh inning, taking advantage of hits by Blake Vasquez and Jack Leech, plus two Tiger errors.

Luke Phillips' single drove in two more runs in the eighth to effectively put the game away for West Alabama. Phillips chased Dominique Dawson, who had doubled, and Delgado after he reached on the error.

"Delgado had a huge day despite not feeling well, but we expect Nick to always be a gamer and he was again today," Rundles said. "Luke's (Phillips) two RBI after they got close again was also a big hit."

Shorter added a final run in the eighth after Dill walked the first two Hawks hitters to open the frame and Isaiah Madella drove in one on a fielder's choice.

The Tigers step out of GSC play Wednesday with a trip to Montevallo. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. Shorter is host to Georgia College Wednesday at 2 p.m.
