Montevallo Outlasts West Alabama, 16-13, for Baseball Victory

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo came from six runs behind to outlast West Alabama, 16-13, in college baseball action Wednesday at Kermit Johnson Field.
 
The two teams combined for 37 hits while 13 combined pitchers allowed 26 earned runs. Every starter for both teams got at least one hit in the game.
 
West Alabama dropped to 28-15, while Montevallo improved to 25-20.
 
West Alabama jumped on Montevallo starting pitcher Jamison Roney early, scoring four runs on five hits in the top half of the first inning. Nick Delgado lead off the game with a single, allowing him to reach base in 42 of 43 games. Singles by Luke Phillips and Joel Murphy, as well as doubles by Dylan Little and Marcus Morrisette, all drove in runs.
 
Phillips drove in two more runs with a one-out single in the top of the second to stretch the UWA lead to 6-0. A sacrifice fly by Dominic Deville and a RBI single by Collin Dupree cut the UWA lead to 6-2.
 
The Tigers stretched the lead to 7-3 in the top of the third. Murphy's third triple of the season led off the frame and he later scored on a wild pitch. West Alabama had nine hits in the first three innings.
 
Tyler Krabbe doubled to drive in two runs for the Falcons in the Montevallo half of the third inning, cutting the UWA lead to 7-4. UWA answered with three more in the top of the fourth. Doubles by Murphy and Luke Latham drove in runs in the frame.
 
Krabbe stroked a bases-loaded triple and Caleb Ledbetter an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to cut the UWA lead to 10-8 and give Krabbe five RBI.
 
West Alabama stretched its lead to 13-8 in the top of the sixth on solo home runs by Morrisette and Latham. Morrisette's homer was his seventh and Latham's his second. Little's sacrifice fly drove in Phillips, who had tripled to lead off the inning.
 
Sebastian Samuel hit his 16th homer of the season, a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Dominique Deville drove in a run with a single to cut the Tiger lead to 13-12.
 
Ledbetter's double off the wall in the bottom of the seventh drove in a pair of runs and gave Montevallo its first lead of the game at 14-13.
 
Ryan Brooks hit his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot, to stretch the Falcon lead to 15-13 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Matthew Furuto provided the final Falcon margin with an RBI single.
 
Murphy had four hits and Luke Phillips contributed three hits and three RBI for West Alabama. Delgado finished with two hits, as did Little, Morrisette and Latham.
 
Ledbetter and Daniel Pardo had three hits apiece for Montevallo, while Krabbe drove in five runs on two hits. Ledbetter drove in three more Falcon runs.
 
Drew Mullinax (4-1) earned the pitching win in relief. Colton Nussel picked up his second save, Jay Booth (1-1)took the loss for West Alabama.
 
West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play with a doubleheader at West Georgia on Saturday at 1 p.m. CDT. Montevallo is host to Peach Belt foe USC-Aiken Friday at 7:30 p.m.
